1. Age Limit
Candidates aged 16.5 years to 19.5 years are considered eligible to appear for the NDA exam. The NDA exam age limit is the same for male and female students. However, the range of dates of birth varies for the NDA exam qualification for NDA 1 and NDA 2. Additionally, the applying candidates must be unmarried.
2. Educational Qualification
The niche of defence a candidate can choose from depends on their educational qualification.
For Army Wing: Students need to have passed 12th class with a minimum of 60% marks from a recognized board, regardless of their subject or stream.
For Air Force & Navy Wing: Students need to have passed 12th class with a minimum of 60% marks in the PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) stream from a recognized board.
Students currently appearing for their 12th class board exams are also eligible to enter only if they submit proof of passing before admission.
3. Physical Fitness Standards
For any military service, meeting the physical fitness standards of the service is a necessity. The physical fitness standards for NDA vary at several places for male and female students.
Height - Minimum height required for male students to join the army and navy wings is 162 cm, while for female students, it is 152 cm. To join the Air Force Wing, the minimum height requirement is 162.5 cm for both male and female students.
Height relaxations are provided to students from Northeast India, Garhwal, Kumaon, Gorkhas (5 cm relaxation), and Lakshadweep (2 cm relaxation).
Weight - The weight requirement differs according to the height of the candidate. Candidates who are underweight or overweight in proportion to their height are deemed unfit.
Vision Requirements - The distance vision (corrected) of candidates should be 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye.
Myopia should not be more than 2.5 D.
Hypermetropia not more than 3.5 D.
Air Force candidates must not wear spectacles.
Colour Perception - CP-I is mandatory for the Air Force Wing, while a minimum of CP-III is required for other branches.
Night Blindness - Candidates suffering from night blindness will be rejected.
The candidate needs to have normal hearing, no dental problems, and no medical ailments.
NDA: The Three Stages of Exam
NDA is conducted in three stages - written examination, Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, and medical examination. After these three exams, a merit list is released for all the candidates who have scored higher than the cutoff marks of the tests and have passed the three stages.
1. Written Examination
A test for 900 marks consisting of two subjects - Mathematics (300 marks) and General Ability Test (GAT) (600 marks). GAT is further divided into English (200 marks) and General Knowledge/Science (400 marks).
2. SSB Interview
It is a 5 day assessment worth 900 marks, conducted in two stages screening and detailed assessment. Candidates can read a detailed explanation of the SSB interview process to understand the complete selection procedure and assessment criteria.
Screening - Candidates have to undergo the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) and the Picture Perception & Description Test (PP & DT).
Detailed Assessment - Conducted in 4 days, consisting of psychology tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SD), Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, interview, and conference.
3. Medical Examination
Candidates who have succeeded in the above two stages are tested in a medical examination where they are assessed to meet the appropriate height, weight, visual, and all other physical or medical requirements as per their chosen branch of the military.
